Hard drive experts! What are SSDs good for, really?
OK, the new Solid State Drives are obviously fast and still overpriced on a cost per GB basis… But my question is what types of applications make them a good choice- other than putting them in laptops as a shock-proofing measure?
Gaming- that seems like a waste, since most levels are loaded into memory and disk i/o is fairly limited. Sure I could reduce startup times but that’s not worth the ridiculous price.
I could see database or e-mail servers where disk read times could be cut dramatically- but SSD capacities are much too small right now. 120gb is tiny compared to current SATA drive capacities.
Also, how is SSD technology different from flash storage? USB flash drives can only be read/written a certain number of times before losing their capacity to store data. I’m assuming that SSD drives are different since they’re being sold as HDD replacements. Anyone know what’s fundamentally different about SSDs so they don’t have that limitation?

They massively decrease loading times. So things like loading windows, opening the internet, opening any program can be like twice as quick. Game loading times are quite a bit faster.
I would definitely love one. Its just like you say the price is very high and its hard to justify.
When you see a SSD compared to a hard drive it is a big difference.
