WoW Server storage size compared to Client size?
I am wandering what the true size is of the WoW server that typically runs a realm? I know private server repacks usually after adding maps seems to be about 1gb or less from what I have noticed.
I couldn’t find any info easily on google about this…anyone have idea how many Gigabytes of data it takes server side vs client side to run a Realm? I don’t know if Blizzard has ‘ever’ spoken about the massive ammounts of information is takes to run one server but any information would be kewl.
The reason I am asking this is because it seems that even though private servers can run WoW they never seem to have everything working the way Blizzard has if working. I don’t know if this is simply due to certain elements server side that are obviously not included in the client, or if the client has all the info needed to make the game work?
Basically the server only processes data and manages connections. The dedicated server may have been finely tuned for bugs because Blizzard maintains that end and they can do what they want. In WoW… Blizzard is God, if they want light… let there be light… That’s just the incredibility of programming a game that is played by millions.
However, if you’re talking about a highly used public server, WoW databases are probably stacked in Terabytes of Disk Space at a time in clusters of servers that share well over 15 Xeon or AMD enterprise level processors and over a terabyte of clustered RAM to support all clients since WoW is so popular. I could only imagine how the Network Admin rips his hair out if the Network load balancing fails at any given time.
I don’t know this for a fact for WoW but I am certain how database clusters work and I’m sure that it’s not a cheap server cluster to maintain and provide services 99.9% of the year without cost. Which is probably why they charge monthly to play.
